In July 2021, Binhi held its first virtual culminating activities for the School year 2020-21 in cooperation with Binhi’s partner sites: Rosalie Rendu Development Center in Sucat, Paranaque, Marcela Marcelo Elementary School in Pasay City, Manggahan Elementary School in Pasig City, and Calamba Elementary School in Calamba, Laguna and sponsors.

This virtual culminating activity held on the Binhi Facebook page was conducted for all Binhi classes. Binhi scholars, parents, and corporate sponsors from Light Rail Manila Corporation, Lopez Holdings Corporation, Woodrose Alumnae Association to individual sponsors gathered together virtually to celebrate this notable event in recognition of everyone’s hard work and dedication in this wonderful journey.

This year’s graduating class consisted of six classes from 4 sites with a total of 117 completers. At the end of the school year 2020-2021, we have thus far reached 3913 students in 44 sites. A proof that despite the pandemic, Binhi was still able to provide intervention for struggling readers that helped improve their reading skills. From 21.8% pre-program to 75.4% post-program, showing an improvement rate of 53.6%.

As the school year came to a close, Marisa Grassi, Binhi Co-Founder shared a message during the culminating activity at Manggahan Elementary School, Pasig: “Sa mga magulang, salamat sa suporta niyo sa inyong mga anak, ito ay isang tunay na ‘binhi’ sa kanilang kinabukasan…”

With the difficult circumstances in education brought about by the pandemic, Binhi was challenged to keep the seeds of education alive. Teachers and parents found ways to work together to ensure that the students continue to learn during this crisis.

Binhi English Literacy Foundation is committed, it will continue to plant the seed of education by reaching 11 possible Binhi sites for the next school year 2021-2022.

“Ito ang hamon ng pandemya sa ating mga magulang, kung mahirap lumabas, gawing paaralan ang ‘yong bahay, seryosohin ang mga worksheets at activity sheets na ibinibigay ng mga teachers para dire-diretso ang pag-abante ng mga bata…” -Chary Mercado, Binhi sponsor.
